Wales v New Zealand preview

Wales fans are no strangers to turning up to the Principality Stadium in hope as much as expectation, but even hope may be in short supply today. Wales haven’t beaten the All Blacks since 1953 – even Warren Gatland came up short against his compatriots – and there appears to be little chance of that dismal run ending this weekend.

Wales may have come out on top against Japan last time out, but that was just their second victory in two years – and even then, their last-minute win was arguably against the run of play. Head coach Steve Tandy has made five changes to his starting XV, with Tom Rogers in for the suspended Josh Adams on the wing, and Joe Hawkins making his first appearance in two years at centre. Rhys Carré and Keiron Assiratti return to the front row, while Ospreys’ Harri Deaves makes his international debut at openside.

New Zealand boss Scott Robertson has given his side a more comprehensive overhaul, with only Simon Parker, Scott Barrett and Will Jordan remaining from the side that lost to England last Saturday. But, while this is some way from a vintage All Blacks side, they’re likely to have way too much for a Wales team at a very low ebb.
