France v South Africa match preview
This may just be the match of the autumn. Two years ago these sides met at the same venue in the World Cup quarter-finals, in what would become one of the greatest rugby matches of all time. The Springboks were narrow 29-28 winners that day, and went on to lift a second successive World Cup; France were left heartbroken as their dreams of winning their home tournament slipped through their fingers – to say there’ll be unfinished business in Paris would be an understatement.
Les Bleus head coach Fabien Galthié has named a predictably strong side for this rematch, with the forward pack one of the few capable of going toe-to-toe with the mighty Springboks. Behind them, prolific goalkicker Thomas Ramos, free-scoring wings Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Biarrey, and centres Pierre-Louis Barassi and Gaël Fickou form a formidable back division. With the talismanic Antoine Dupont still a few weeks from fitness, Nolann Le Garrec partners Romain Ntamack at half-back.
The Springboks come into the match on the back of a Rugby Championship victory and last week’s thrashing of Japan. Team boss Rassie Erasmus has made five changes to the starting XV, including the returns of Thomas du Toit, Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit in the scrum. Captain Siya Kolisi wins his 100th cap.
Those names would give any head coach confidence, but Thursday’s fun and games – which saw Erasmus correctly predicting France’s 23 before it was announced – a sign of pre-match nerves or simply mind games? All will be revealed under the Saturday night lights on what’s set to be a dry and mild night in Paris.
