France v Australia preview
France have not had the autumn they were hoping for. A 34-21 victory over Fiji will have been welcome but expected, though the comprehensive 32-17 defeat to a Springboks team that played half the match with 14 men was a massive disappointment – especially for a side looking to avenge defeat in the World Cup quarter-final in 2023.
Head coach Fabien Galthié has selected a side loaded with experience, with Gaël Fickou back in the centres, and Anthony Jelonch, Charles Ollivon and Grégory Alldritt reunited in the back row for the first time since that aforementioned quarter-final. The problem is, however well they play, it might not be enough to persuade the doubters this was a worthwhile autumn.
Because Australia, playing their 15th match since the start of July, are limping to the end of the year. Victories over the British & Irish Lions, Argentina and South Africa now feel like a distant memory, as the Wallabies have won just one (against Japan) of their last seven games. The question is, can they give head coach Joe Schmidt a fitting send-off in his final match in charge?
