England v All Blacks match preview
The All Blacks have had the upper hand in this fixture since England knocked them out of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. A draw and a run of close-run defeats (25-25, 16-15, 24-17, 24-22) have suggested there’s little to choose between the two sides, especially with England looking impressive on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run.
England boss Steve Borthwick has invited tennis star Emma Raducanu and Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler into camp this week in an effort to rally his troops, though they shouldn’t need much pumping up for this one. Experienced fly-half George Ford gets the nod as string-puller-in-chief, while Borthwick has made a declaration of strength with a powerful “Pom squad” 6-2 bench boasting six British & Irish Lions.
Scotland ran New Zealand close last weekend, before a late All Blacks rally (led by substitute Damian McKenzie) secured victory. That near-miss will surely galvanise a visiting team that welcomes captain Scott Barrett back to the second row. Even so, England will surely feel today’s game – on a mild, potentially wet afternoon at Twickenham – is a golden opportunity for a famous win.
