England v Fiji match preview

Steve Borthwick’s England head into this Autumn Nations Series match against Fiji on the back of a convincing win over Australia last weekend which set discussions in motion yet again around young star Henry Pollock.

The Northampton Saints back-row is a bit like marmite, you either love him or hate him. The discourse around him came back to the fore after his starring role off of the bench against the Wallabies which saw him score a classy try. However, his love of a celebration and confident attitude have ruffled some feathers among the rugby community, which will surely be no different this weekend.

England are dealing with some injuries which include a hand issue to full-back Freddie Steward, sustained in the game against Australia. This means Borthwick will have to reshuffle the back line in some form.

Despite the disruption, England will still enter the game as favourites over Fiji. Yet it would be an error for the home side to underestimate their opponents as they almost did back in 2023 when Fiji beat them 30-22 in a World Cup warm-up, the last time the Flying Fijians played at Twickenham.

England did manage to get their revenge  a few months later at the Rugby World Cup, beating Fiji in the quarter-final, the last game between these two nations.

During last year’s Autumn Internationals, Fiji enacted some upsets, the toast of which coming with their first-ever win in Cardiff after beating Wales 24-19. More recently they beat Scotland for the first time since 2017 in a victory which started their current run of five consecutive wins.

Stars like Caleb Muntz and Viliame Mata will be looking to extend that winning run and end England’s, who are on their own consecutive victory streak of eight wins.
